How to Kill the Curse of Shiny Object Syndrome Forever

Hey there, I’m Heather Stevens from Wise Owl Marketing, and today I’ve got a really important video for you.

I was having a conversation with a client recently about the “Shiny Object Syndrome” and how so many of us as entrepreneurs kind of experience ADD in our life and in our business. And it can feel really hard, like you’re just doing all of this work, but you’re not getting anywhere and you’re spinning all the plates.

In today’s video, I am going to show you how to really overcome that shiny object syndrome, get rid of entrepreneurial ADHD, and shift from frantic and scattered to focused and really purposeful in your business.

So let’s go ahead and get started, shall we?

Don’t be Scattered. Stay Focused

Let’s talk about why this is so important. I want you to picture two different things in your mind right now. A disco ball that scatters light in every different direction. It can be kind of fun, right, but not very productive. Compare that to a laser that can actually cut steel. It’s focused. It’s a very powerful focused light. That’s what we want to achieve in our business.

When we’re scattered like the disco ball, it’s very hard to make progress. Our progress is very slow. We feel like we’re inching along, we get bored, we get burned out, we move on to something else that’s more fun and more exciting.

Whereas if you’re focused on something like a laser, you feel like you’re making absolute massive progress. You’ll look back and think, gosh, I can’t believe I got that done already, and you are on fire and excited. It keeps you motivated in your business when you can be disciplined enough to stay focused.

When I was a little girl, my dad used to say that I would ping like a BB in a tin can. I was all over the place.

I did the same thing in my business when I first started. I was downloading “all the things.” I was signing up for programs. I had multiple courses I was taking at the same time and I was never actually finishing anything. I was just doing everything, which makes you feel busy. It makes you feel successful. It makes you feel like you’re making progress, but when you really stop and you look at it, you’ve gone nowhere.

I had to get really, really serious about this. And what I did was, I printed off a picture of a graphic from the book Essentialism, and this is a graphic of a circle with a bunch of arrows coming out of it that are maybe an inch long versus one circle with one big long arrow coming up out of it.

What it’s demonstrating is that when you are working on a bunch of different things at the same time, you’re making very small inches of progress for each one, versus working on the one main thing. You are focused and you can make some serious results. It’s like that BB pinging in a tin can versus an arrow being shot straight out. It’s really, really exciting to see this progress.

Three Steps to Staying Focused and Maximizing your Energy

Here’s a three-step process for you that I use in my business in order to help me stay focused.

Step #1

First one is I need to know my goal. So, what is my big goal that I’m working for? And then, what is the thing I need to do next in order to make that goal a reality? So step one is to know your goals.

Step #2

Step two is to have a plan. If you’re building a website, for instance, you’ve seen my three-step process that I use for building websites and helping clients get results in their business. You need to know which step or phase you’re in, and which step of that phase you’re on. You need to have a plan. If you’re just building your foundation to your website in your funnel, you don’t need to be working on marketing yet because any marketing efforts that you do are going to be wasted because you’re not converting leads.

So, have your plan. You need to know what steps you’re working on. You need to have the tools in place. Think about going to cook a recipe, it’s much easier if you have all the ingredients on hand versus having to run to the store for each thing. You want to keep all of your tools, your steps and your plan in front of you so you know exactly what you need to be working on next.

Step #3

And the last thing is to really focus. I think it was Robert Kiyosaki who said, “Focus stands for Follow One Course Until Successful.” And that’s really the overview that I’m talking about here. Eliminate distractions, turn off notifications, unsubscribe to all of those email lists, keep your inbox empty so that you don’t have distractions from amazing programs that you know you would love, but that you’re not ready for in your business right now.

Keep things focused and have a system, and I know it’s going to help you go from that frantic, scattered, overwhelmed entrepreneur to someone who is making serious waves in their industry, reaching your goals, and doing the things that really matter to you.

I hope this training was helpful. It’s definitely been something that’s really helped me. Print this thing out, get the book. It’s totally a good book to read, but print this out and use it as a reminder to stay focused on what is important to you right now.

Thanks for watching!
