Business Marketing & Baseball: Just Keep Swinging

“Every accomplishment begins with a decision to step up to the plate.”

– Unknown

My 9-year-old son is my hero. He is playing baseball for the first time this summer. He’s one of the youngest boys on a team of boys who have been playing for several years.

  • He’s learning to catch, chasing more missed balls than those that make it into his glove.
  • He’s learning to hit, spending hours at the batting cage so he can stop hearing the thud of the catcher’s mitt way more frequently than the crack of the bat.
  • He’s learning to throw, with whiffle balls in the house and baseballs outside, trying to figure out accuracy and gain strength behind his pitch.

When You Just Keep Striking Out

(While Marketing Your Business and in Baseball)

It often takes longer than we think it should, to get our first client. Even when we continue stepping up to the plate, we strike out.  You can’t become a good batter if you don’t practice hitting the ball, and you can’t become great at closing sales if you don’t practice presenting your offer.

My son struck out every time he was at bat for the first six games of the season. He took a hard hit to the hip by a pitch early in the season. After that, he was scared to step up to the plate. He wouldn’t have been able to hit the ball with a 6-foot bat.

On the way to the last three games, I’ve heard, “Tonight’s my night, mom!” And for the last three games, I’ve delivered a “just keep swinging” pep talk on the drive home.

We had a game last night and the pitcher on the opposing team was good. Very good. Several of our team’s best batters struck out in the first inning by his fast pitches.

I was feeling a little heart-sick as my son stepped up to the plate. He had been giving me thumbs up from the dugout and I knew his heart was set on getting a hit.

One swinging strike.

One ball.

CRACK!

A base hit, a steal on 2nd and 3rd, and a run batted in by a teammate. (Please excuse my daughter’s excited screaming in the background! LOL)

He made contact with the ball twice more last night. One foul ball and another base hit.

“Baseball is the only field of endeavor where a man can succeed three times out of ten and be considered a good performer.” – Ted Williams

I disagree.

I provide business marketing systems & strategies for coaches, consultants, and service-based business owners. Even if they only close 3 out of 10 discovery calls per week, they can still be (very) successful in their business.

The challenge most business owners face is that the discovery calls are so few and far between that if they only close 3 out of ten, they struggle to pay the bills and survive.

That’s where I come in. I work with my clients to develop a lead funnel that helps them convert a higher percentage of website visitors into leads who book more discovery calls. Once we have a funnel set up that is converting well, we shift our focus to driving traffic to the funnel to speed up the frequency of their calls.

Business Marketing with a highly converting lead funnel is a lot like those pitching machines at the batting cages, sending you a steady stream of leads and discovery calls.

Do you need more leads to step up to the plate and hit the ball?
