Remember When It All Used to Be So Exciting?
If you’re like most entrepreneurs, before you were self-employed, you had a day job working for someone else. Over time, you started to develop your own thing as a side gig. During those days, you probably sat at work watching the clock because you couldn’t wait to stop doing someone else’s thing and get home to do your thing.
And now that your thing has become your business, it has come to include much, much more.
Some additions may include…
- Accounting, after all, somebody has to balance the books
- Sales, which means one-on-one time with leads who may or may not become clients
- Marketing, because you can’t exactly have a self-sustaining business without finding ways to generate demand for it
- Taxes, because everybody who owns a business has to deal with them
Remember when you didn’t have any of that to worry about?
Wasn’t it nice when you could focus on what you really wanted to do and didn’t have all those extra headaches?
Once we transition into being full-time business owners, all those frustrations with that other stuff can threaten to overrun us and pour cold water on the fiery passion that used to drive us. Mondays while working for yourself can feel like Mondays working for someone else.
How Would You Like to Wake Up Early Monday Morning and Be Excited about Going to Work?
Yes, it’s possible to reclaim that excitement. To help, I want to offer three tips to help you become happier as a business owner, despite the fact that you have all these extra things to deal with.
Build Time into Your Schedule to Grow in Your Field of Expertise
This may simply mean spending a half-hour somewhere during the day reading about the stuff that inspired you to start your own business in the first place. Just taking that time regularly to reconnect with your passion can help put everything else in perspective.
Focus Your Business on What You’re Good At
It’s tempting to want to be everything to everyone. But the more you move outside your zone of genius, the less exhilarating the work becomes. If you allow your schedule to become filled with work that you really didn’t want to do in the first place, you’re going to end up running a business you didn’t really want. By staying in your lane, you can feel good about getting up in the morning and going to your desk because you know you’re going to enjoy your day.
Celebrate the Wins, Even the Small Ones
Have you ever noticed that you tend to spend far more emotional energy on things that don’t go well than things that do? Let’s try to change that. Find ways to reward yourself for success. If you get your work done ahead of schedule, take a little bit of time off to enjoy the day. If you hit a big financial milestone, treat yourself to a nice dinner. Did you finish setting up that new funnel for your brand new offer? Spend a little money on a course or other resource that you will enjoy and will help maximize its value.
You are Responsible for Improving Your Happiness as a Business Owner
As a business owner, you need to take care of yourself and nurture your passion for doing what you do best. No one else is going to do it for you, so make sure to build it into your day. Add the things you need and set boundaries where you need them. It will help you improve your happiness doing what you do.
If you don’t take care of yourself, no one else will. At the end of the day, you are your business. For your business to thrive, you need to thrive.
Strengthen Your Business While Reducing Stress
If you have too much on your plate, that takes away your ability to thrive. You will find yourself spending time on things you don’t want to do and not spending time on the things you love doing. Passion falls away and frustration takes its place.
