You need a web designer. Great! Where do you start, and what should you ask them? There’s a lot of information and knowing what to ask when interviewing a new web designer will help you whittle down exactly what you want your site to look like. Asking your designer questions will help you potentially avoid some major issues down the road.
Whether or not you know how to design a website, sometimes not asking the right questions can lead you to a potential nightmare that never ends. Websites are ever-changing with new technology and new tools.
Questions to Ask When Interviewing a Web Designer
How long will it take to complete?
You want to have a clear timeline of when your site will be finished. If it isn’t done during the time frame you were told, it can cause chaos and push your other projects (maybe even your money) to the back burner.
What do you need from me?
Will your designer need photos, logos, etc., from you, or will they provide them?
Do you optimize SEO for sites?
This is super important in how you rank through search engines. Having the right SEO is either going to break or make your site.
Will this site drive traffic and create leads?
This is also super important. You want your site to turn your audience into clients/customers.
What do you charge?
You probably have a budget in mind of how much you want to spend on your site. Depending on what you want, and what you add to it later, can potentially push you over your budget. Some designers may offer payment plans.
Can I view the site and approve it while it’s being built?
Do you want to see the site while it’s being built so you can have the designer make adjustments as they go, or do you want to wait until the site is live? My guess would be the first. Something might be wrong on the site (copy, typos, etc.), and seeing that in real-time can be beneficial.
Can you include e-commerce?
Are you using your site to sell products? You’ll need e-commerce included.
How many pages will I get?
There may be a max number of pages you get with your site. Be sure that your site covers all the info by including the correct number of pages.
Do you have a portfolio?
You should probably have already viewed your designers’ other work. You’ll get a good idea of their style and if they’ll be a good fit. Also, check out the other sites listed to see how they work.
Do you offer other services?
Does your designer offer logo design, copywriter services, or even graphic design? This could be a good idea if you need these services.
Will I get maintenance after the site is completed if I need it?
Are you going to maintain your site or do you want the designer to maintain it? Some tools and website coding needs occasional updating more often than not.
How many revisions are included?
What if you don’t like your site’s 1st or 5th draft? Maybe you don’t like the color scheme or placement of buttons. Be sure your designer is clear on how many revisions you will get because they can cost you after a certain number.
Will I need to provide content, or do you have a copywriter?
Are you writing your site’s content? If not, you may want to find out what it will cost to hire a copywriter or if the designer offers those services.
Will I be able to edit the site after it’s done?
Your site is live! YAY! It’s been five months, and you no longer like your “About Me” message. Are you able to update it, or will the designer have to update it for you?
