Why Do You Need a Marketing Coach?

If your sink clogs and you can’t fix it with a liquid drain de-clogger, what do you do?

Well, in days of old, you would call in an expert. Hiring a plumber would bring years of knowledge and experience into your house so that you could have a sink that worked as good as new.

But today? More than likely you would ask Google or Siri. In an instant, a list of possible sources of information would appear at your fingertips. Again, years of information and experience by experts, but this time it’s free.

Anything you want to know is online. Google is the #1 search engine in the world, and experts everywhere fill their blogs with articles designed to help people overcome their problems. And if a blog article isn’t enough, they often offer you freebie lead magnets for download. Of course, for the more visual person, there’s always YouTube.

Yes, accessibility to free information also applies to learning how to market your business. There is a slew of information out there to get you up and moving. Some of it is great! Some of it is good. And some of it is…well…” not so good” (and may even take you a step backward).

So, since we live in a DIY world with all that free information, why in the world would you want to hire a marketing coach?

Reasons to Hire a Marketing Coach

You Need a Strategy

Here you go: flour, butter, salt, pepper, milk, eggs, and cream of tartar.

Now, go make a souffle!

Just because you have all the ingredients doesn’t mean you know how they go together to achieve success.

Part of the problem of the DIY approach to learning how to market your business is that most people don’t realize how important starting with a strategy really is. But when you know exactly what it is you’re trying to accomplish and have a plan to get you there, you will find that many elements of your business just fall into place. You no longer have to bang your head against the desk trying to figure out what to do next. It’s all laid out for you. And even in its flexibility (after all, all plans go awry), it guides you in a way that keeps you on target while you adapt.

You Can Avoid Tech Overwhelm

I remember when I was first learning to work with email platforms. The menu and buttons…it was all new. Sometimes I would click the wrong thing and have to figure out what I just did. Sometimes, I started to panic, “Did I break it? Do I have to start over? Is all that work gone?”

Learning how to deal with tech can be a nightmare. And it’s not just about a learning curve. It’s about the fear that if you do something wrong you’re going to break something you’ve worked hard to put together. It’s like being caught in a never-ending game of Jenga where you are afraid to pull out the next piece because it could cause everything to come tumbling down around you.

This is a great reason to hire a marketing coach. They’ve been through it all. They can show you how to set up your systems so that you know what you’re doing and don’t have to worry about pushing the wrong button.

In a world of online business platforms, sometimes asking for help is just the easiest and safest thing to do.

You Can Save Time

This goes along with the previous two, but is worth separating out. Bottom line: time is money, especially when you own your own business.

Any business owner needs to know a certain amount about marketing. After all, if you can’t market your business efficiently and effectively, you might not have a business for long. So, learning marketing is vital.

But, how much time do you really want to spend on learning marketing rather than helping your clients?

When taking the DIY route, it’s maximum effort/minumum gain. You will spend hours upon hours every week looking up information, wrapping your mind around it all, trying it out, and then seeing if it works. And too often you will find that it doesn’t. Then, it’s back to the drawing board. All those hours of potential productivity flushed.

When you work with a marketing coach, you get direct access to someone who has a proven track record of getting businesses like yours moving forward. By stepping off the DIY path, you take a shortcut that could literally cut off years from your journey to success.

But, What if You Don’t Have the Money?

Here’s the problem with hiring a marketing coach: It’s expensive.

One-on-one training with an expert costs a lot of money. Business owners do it because, in the end, it will make them a lot more money. So it’s a great investment in the long run.

But what if you don’t have that kind of cash to spend on personalized coaching?

Well, the DIY route certainly becomes a good option. After all, even though it will cost you significantly when it comes to your personal time and slower business momentum, it’s free financially. And this is why a lot of people go that route.

Another route, though, is to get into a group coaching program. While group coaching doesn’t offer as much attention as one-on-one coaching, it’s the next best thing. Plus, it has the added benefit of cost-sharing. The rates are significantly lower because it spreads the cost out among its members. And you still get face time with a professional marketing coach (even if it isn’t quite as much).

Group coaching also gives you the benefits of the community and the members’ collective experiences. If someone asks a question you hadn’t thought of, you still get to benefit. Plus group coaching offers opportunities for networking, potential referrals, accountability, and friendship!
