Look, I get it. Everyone’s talking about why you should be doing YouTube to grow your busienss. If you’re like me you’ve been watching YouTube videos and scrolling through Quora searching for “reasons to start a YouTube” channel, wondering if it’s worth adding another thing to your already full plate.
Maybe you’ve even tried creating videos before, only to get overwhelmed and give up. As someone who’s been exactly where you are, let me share something honest: it took me three attempts over 15 years to finally find my groove as a content creator on YouTube.
But here’s what I wish someone had told me earlier – the perfect time to start creating content isn’t when you’re “ready” (because let’s face it, we never feel completely ready). It’s when you have something valuable to share. And as a coach, course creator, or service provider? You’ve already got that in spades.

My Current Challenge
A couple of weeks ago I decided to jump into YouTube with both feet. I started a new 12 week year challenge, following the principles in the 12 week year book. I have set two goals for myself.
- One of them is to lose 12 pounds-I’ve put some weight on this year.
- The other is to publish one video at least per week for the 12 weeks ending up the year here with a goal to monetize my YouTube channel.
I started off the year planning on doing a video a week and got off strong in the springtime. But then life got a little challenging and I fell off my routine. I am back and focused now. And after just a couple of weeks creating these videos and I have noticed something remarkable. I’m already seeing growth and benefits from YouTube.
This video and blog post today is designed to pique your interest and hopefully push you over the edge to, instead of just considering doing YouTube, to actually jumping in and doing this with me. Click to subscribe and let’s grow together!
The Benefits of Starting a YouTube Channel (That Nobody Talks About)
Let’s move past the obvious reasons why people say you should start a channel. Sure, YouTube provides a platform for reaching a global audience, but what does that actually mean for you as a service provider? Let me share what I’ve discovered since finally committing to consistent content creation on YouTube.
Real Talk: What Creating Content on YouTube Looks Like for Service Providers
Before we dive into the 22 reasons to start creating videos (and yes, there are actually 22 – I got carried away because I’m that excited about this), here’s what makes YouTube a great place for people like us:
- You don’t need to dance, point at text, or do anything that feels inauthentic
- YouTube’s algorithm actually supports new content creators who provide value
- Right now the requirement to get monetizes is lower than it used to be!
- You only need 500 subscribers (it used to be 1,000)!
- And you only need 3000 watch hours (it used to be 4000)!
- Your expertise naturally translates into video content that people are searching for
Create Your Channel: It’s Simpler Than Your Fear Is Telling You
Remember setting up your first website? This is way easier. It’s as simple as using your Google account to get started. I’ve got a guide to help you with this at the end of the post. But before you rush off to start YouTube, let’s talk about why it’s worth pushing past the initial tech fears and how to make videos that feel true to who you are.
22 Reasons Why You Should Start a YouTube Channel Now!
YouTube can completely transform your business, (and no, it’s not too late to start!) Here are just a few of the ways!
1. Double (or Triple?) Your Search Engine Impact
When you start a channel, you’re not just creating YouTube content – you’re creating content that shows up in Google too. As someone who’s been blogging since 2007, trust me when I say this is a game-changer for reaching new clients.
- Your video can show up in YouTube Search
- Your video can show up in Google Search
- Turn your video transcript into a blog post (like this one) to show up in Google Search
2. Generate Better Quality Leads (Without Feeling Salesy)
Want to know the best part about creating content on YouTube? Your leads come to you pre-sold. In my first two months of consistent uploading, I landed three new clients who already knew they wanted to work with me. No awkward discovery calls required.

3. Create Content That Keeps Working for Years
Remember that Instagram post you spent hours perfecting? The one that disappeared from feeds after 24 hours? YouTube content is different. Your video content can continue bringing in leads for months and even years.
- TikTok – Instant Decay
- Snapchat – Instant Decay
- Twitter – 15-18 minutes
- Facebook – 6 hours
- LinkedIn – 24 hours
- Instagram – 48 hours
- YouTube – 20+ days
- Blog Posts – 2+ years

4. Reach a Larger Audience (Without Shouting into the Void)
Fun fact: YouTube creators can now monetize their channel with fewer requirements than ever before. But even better? The platform actively helps new channels reach viewers who are actually interested in what you’re teaching.
5. Build Trust Through Video (Even If You Hate Being on Camera)
Let me confess something: I still feel awkward on camera sometimes. But here’s what I’ve learned – that actually helps create high quality content because it makes you more relatable. Your audience wants to see the real you, not some polished, perfect version.
6. Develop Your Unique Voice
You know how everyone says you need to “build your personal brand”? YouTube lets you do that naturally. Just by sharing your expertise and personality, you’ll attract viewers who resonate with your specific approach. No fancy branding required.
7. Create a True Community
If you’ve been using social media to grow your business, you know how hard it can be to foster a sense of belonging. YouTube is different. The comments section becomes a place where your audience can have real conversations, not just drop emoji reactions.
I am amazed since posting these last 2 weeks how much comment engagement I’ve been getting. It’s way better than I’ve gotten on other social channels!
8. Diversify Your Revenue
Beyond traditional monetization through AdSense (which requires those 500 subscribers and 3000 watch hours I mentioned above), YouTube opens up multiple income streams. From sponsorships, to affiliate promotions, to course sales, to recurring revenue, your channel allows you to create revenue stability in your business.

9. Work Smarter with Content Repurposing
One video can turn into a blog post, several social media clips, a podcast episode, and an email newsletter. It’s like getting five pieces of content for the effort of one. Now that’s what I call efficient content creation!
10. Make an Impact Without the Hard Sell
Remember why you started your business in the first place? To help people, right? YouTube lets you do that at scale. Every video you create has the potential to help someone, whether they become a paying client or not.
11. Build Confidence on Camera
Can we talk about camera anxiety for a minute? I used to get sweaty palms just thinking about recording. Now? I actually look forward to it. Growth happens one video at a time.
One of my most successful videos so far was something I almost didn’t post because I thought it was “too basic.” (Check it out here)
12. Attract Speaking Opportunities
Want to reach a wider audience? Other creators and event organizers use YouTube to find speakers. Your channel becomes your audition reel.
13. Learn New Skills Naturally
From video editing to public speaking, you’ll develop new abilities without even trying. And yes, there are plenty of YouTube tutorials to help you learn (see what I did there?).
14. Express Your Creativity
Even if you think you’re “not creative,” YouTube gives you a place to experiment. Try new things with your content – you might surprise yourself. Don’t obsess over your analytics but check it occasionally to see what content your audience seems to like and then do more of it!
15. Document Your Journey
Your channel becomes a time capsule of your growth. Many of the content creators I’m following are talking about how cringy their first videos are. I can see a difference in mine from when I first started my channel until now and I’m proud of my growth. I have a long way to go, but that’s okay. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but if I get a little bit better with each video, I’m thrilled!
16. Overcome Tech Fears
If you can use Zoom, you can make YouTube videos. Start simple with what you have – your phone or laptop is enough. I’m overcoming my tech fears of editing video. I don’t know why, but it felt really hard for me until I found Descript. Here’s an article I wrote about it a while back: Why Descript Rocks for Time-Strapped Business Owners: The Ultimate Video Editing Tool!
17. Build in Public Accountability
Nothing motivates like knowing your audience is waiting for your next video. It’s like having thousands of accountability partners.
In fact that’s why I started this 12 week challenge on YouTube. I knew that if I didn’t get my videos posted each week, I’d publicly “fail” which is enough incentive to not let me procrastinate!
18. Provide Real-Time Value
When someone asks you a question, you can create a video answer that helps not just them, but everyone with the same question. In fact this article and video is in response to a question from one of my clients who asked if she should be on YouTube. (My answer is: YES! if you haven’t guessed!)
19. Future-Proof Your Marketing
Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. YouTube gives you a reliable platform that complements your existing marketing. It plays nicely into any marketing strategy since it’s visual content that does a great job helping you grow an audience and develop a relationship with them at scale. Plus you can appeal to different learning styles. YouTube is great for people who are visual or auditory learners. And as we discussed you can turn your transcript into a blog post for people who learn best from reading! 🙂
20. Show Instead of Tell
Demonstrating your expertise is so much more powerful than just talking about it. YouTube lets you prove your value in every video. Get your audience excited about your upcoming programs and offers by showing some behind the scenes content. Let them see your strategies in action. Highlight success stories from your clients…the possibilities are endless.
21. Leave a Legacy
My father-in-law passed away this past summer and his an un-started YouTube channel dream passed with him. He talked to me for years about wanting to put his Bible studies on YouTube for others. My husband, kids, and I would give anything to be able to watch them today.
Your knowledge deserves to be shared. YouTube content can continue helping people long after you’ve moved on to new projects.
22. Start When You’re Ready (Now!)
The best part about starting your channel? You can begin exactly where you are, with what you have, today.
Step 1: Record your video:
- Pick one question your audience asks you
- Grab your phone, sit in front of a window with natural light, and press record
- Start with a hook – how will your video help your audience?
- Answer the question
- Ask viewers to subscribe to your channel and share the video if they found it helpful
Step 2: Package your video:
- Then head over to Canva and create a thumbnail (There are a million free templates you can use)
- Write a title for the video on YouTube
- Write a simple description of the video (see the video description template below)
- Be sure to add a link to your lead magnet in the description
Step 3: Share your video:
- If you need to start a YouTube channel, use your Gmail account and set one up (upload your headshot, add a description of your channel and don’t worry about a banner, you can do that later.) Here’s Google’s guide on How to set up a YouTube channel
- Upload your video to YouTube (You can trim off the beginning and ending if you need to right in YouTube. Here’s Google’s tutorial.)
- Add your title, description, and thumbnail
- Schedule when you want the video to go public
- Share it with your email subscribers when it’s live
- Share it with your social media audiences, too
Optional Step 4: Repurpose your video:
- Blog Article:
- Grab the transcript from your video and turn it into a blog post
- Optimize it with your keywords
- Embed your video into the blog post
- Publish and share
- Podcast:
- Strip the audio from your video and turn it into a podcast
- Add your show-notes
- Publish and share
- Shorts & Reels:
- If you want to create TikTok videos, Instagram reels, or YouTube Shorts you can use a program like Opusclips (Affiliate link)
That’s it. Keep it simple. You don’t have to get fancy!
