Does your website feel like a ghost town? Are your visitors as few and far between as they can get? If so, you’re probably making one or both of the two mistakes most people make when trying to get website traffic and marketing their business online.
BEWARE…making either of these mistakes is a fast pass to the graveyard of unreached goals & dreams for your online business.
The first mistake is trying to drive traffic to a website that isn’t set up properly to convert that traffic into leads.
Most coaches & consultants start with social media after they decide to market their business online. They promote themselves on Facebook groups, post to Instagram, pin, podcast, and pray for the phone to ring. It’s a lot of work. And even if they are successful, most of them are using websites that aren’t set up with a lead generation funnel and a follow-up nurture campaign. Their websites are nothing more than a brochure online. You need a website that’s set up to lead visitors to the next step toward working with you. (Psst. I know someone who can help you with that if you’re ready! ;))
The second mistake is taking an “If you build it they will come” approach to marketing.
You cannot assume that potential clients will find them through the magic of SEO. Search Engine Optimization can be very effective at driving traffic but the competition in the search engines is high, and it can take 6 -12 months before you can even start to see results. I absolutely encourage my clients to learn the basics of optimizing their content and doing some keyword research, but unless you’re willing to wait a LONG time to get clients, don’t make SEO your only online marketing strategy.
I’ve said it before and I’ll continue saying it forever. Having a website doesn’t mean you’re going to get clients any more than owning a treadmill will make you fit. (Even a website that is designed to convert!) You have to USE it properly and consistently to get results. You have to learn how to get website traffic.
The Three C’s You Can Leverage to Get Website Traffic and Clients:
Contacts:
Who do you know that can help you get traffic to your website? Think about business owners in industries that overlap. A business coach and a financial planner for instance. Who has access to an audience that is interested in your products/services? Think about people who have a:
- Social media following
- Professional network
- Engaging blog network
- Audience at networking events (online and offline)
- Database or email list of subscribers or past clients
Content:
Is creating content easy and enjoyable for you? Or do you have a lot of content you’ve created in the past you can tap into? If you have been working in your field for a while you probably have a wealth of content that can be repurposed.
Don’t limit yourself to thinking about only written content. Do you have audios you can transcribe? Maybe you have video clips you can split or splice? Have you created lesson plans to teach a subject? Speeches you can use? Music you’ve recorded? Photographs you can share/sell?
Content marketing is an amazing way to drive traffic to your website. Figure out which pieces of content are perfect for your website and which would be good to share offsite to drive traffic.

I think this is the easiest and most effective way to drive traffic to your website to get clients! Paid advertising allows you to specify the exact audience who needs what you have and send as many of them back to your website so it can do its job of converting them to leads and clients. My business has completely changed since I started focusing on driving traffic to my funnel with Facebook Ads. I went from about 2 discovery calls per week to around 10. And the leads I’m getting are much more targeted than they were before.
Bottom line, don’t sit back and passively wait for website traffic and business to come to you.
It will not work.
Get out there and learn one or two of your favorite ways to how to drive website traffic. There are so many ways to drive traffic – pick one or two ways that are fun for you and master them. Don’t try to do it all though – you’ll burn out!
