Your Lead Magnet is Not Working?

I know someone who hands out those free samples at the store. You know, the ones with the little cups and teeny-weeny forks.

That’s her job. I believe she sets up shop in a variety of different stores.

Think about this for a moment.

That means a company is making enough money off of free samples to make it worth their while to hire staff on a full-time basis.

We all know how it works. “Did you like it? Would you like to buy some?” Cha-ching!

And that is a form of lead magnet.

Lead magnets not only work, but also work across business models

So, if your lead magnet isn’t getting you leads, let’s take some time to look it over. Here are possible reasons your lead magnet is not working.

1. Weak Attraction

The first way it might not work is that people may look at the offer and decide they don’t want it.

Uh oh. That’s a huge problem. More than likely it’s because you have created a lead magnet that you think people should want, but it doesn’t really dovetail with what they really need

This identifies a disconnect between you and your ideal client. If nobody wants your lead magnet, then you need another one, one that they know will actually help them.

2. Weak Delivery

Could it be that people who download your lead magnet aren’t interested in what you offer as a result of what they read?

Remember, the goal of a lead magnet is to give your ideal client a quick win. You want them to experience you helping them solve a problem. It demonstrates to them that you have what it takes to help them solve other problems.

If the quality of your lead magnet is low, it won’t be able to offer that experience. Here are three possible reasons your lead magnet is not doing its job once visitors consume it.

Maybe It Doesn’t Solve Their Issue

If they don’t get a win as a result of your lead magnet, they are probably not going to pursue more. After all, they’ve tried working with you and it isn’t working for them. A bad experience can drive people away as well as a good experience can attract them and make them want more.

Maybe It Doesn’t Identify the Next Problem

Once your lead magnet helps them solve their current problem, it needs to identify the next problem they will face. If it doesn’t do that, then they can simply take their win and move on. But, if you helped them overcome one problem, then they will realize you can probably help them with the next. Make sure they know you have more for them. All they need to do is be willing to take the next step with you.

Maybe You Aren’t Following Up

The point of a lead magnet is to start a conversation with a positive experience. That’s where your follow-up emails come in. Are you sending them a nurturing welcome sequence so that they can get to know you, like you, and trust you enough to start spending money on you? Your lead magnet isn’t meant to work in a vacuum. It’s meant to work as part of a larger system.

3. Out of Date

Is your lead magnet getting a bit old? Maybe it’s time to swap it out for a new, fresh one. This could be a wonderful opportunity to create something new that can help your ideal client even more.

How’s Your Lead Magnet Doing?

If it’s struggling, take a good, hard look at it. Try to figure out what changes you can make to your system to strengthen it.
